Pre Wedding Ceremonies

The wedding process begins as soon as the families of the boy or the girl realize that their kids have attained the age of becoming the originator of their own families in the capacity of the husband and the wife. They start looking for the most suitable match for their folks. The main rituals observed in this phase include Engagement, Sangeet, Mehendi, Tilak and Haldi.

Engagement
The first ritual that is solemnized is the Engagement. Here the family members of the bride visit the groom’s place to make the formal beginning of the new relationship and a formal declaration is made in this regard. They bless the groom with some auspicious gift items and a ring is presented to him. After this phase gets completed, the relationship becomes quite sure and happening.

Sangeet
This is a very enjoyable part of the whole affair where the women of both the families observe musical sessions at their own places. Here popular songs from Hindi movies or songs of religious importance are sung by the women of both the families. These days some people engage musical choir to do the same thing in a more interesting and enjoyable manner. Obviously it requires more financial expenses.

Mehendi
It’s very significant part of the wedding ceremony which is chiefly observed at the bride’s place. As the established practice, the family of the groom sends ‘Mehendi’ i.e. sacred Heena to the place of the bride one or two days before the actual marriage day. The same mehendi is applied delicately on the palms of both the hands, back of the palms and the arms up to the elbows. Sometimes services of professional designers are also sought to do the same thing in a more delicate and attractive way. It is believed that the deeper the color of the mehendi, the deeper becomes the love of the to-be husband and the wife.

Haldi
This ritual is also a very important part of the Hindu marriage ceremony. ‘Haldi’ i.e. sacred turmeric plays a significant role in the wedding rituals. On this occasion that Haldi is applied on the body, especially on the hands, legs, forehead and face of the betrothed boy and girl. This ritual is separately observed in the places of the bride and the groom. The Haldi that is applied on the bride’s body is usually sent to her from the house of her probable in-laws. This ceremony, as it is believed to be, makes the betrothed sacred and makes them purged with the feelings of the forthcoming celebration in which they are supposed to play a very important part. Generally the women, especially the unmarried girls, of both the families take part in it. This occasion is indeed an extremely enjoyable episode of the whole wedding celebration which is enjoyed by one and all present on the spot.

 Tilak
 This ceremony is the first official ritual of the wedding ceremony of a Hindu marriage. Here the bride is given a ceremonial recognition of the to-be son-in-law for the bride’s family. He is blessed by the elders of the bride’s family and is offered all sorts of gift items which include wedding attire, other accessories, cosmetic items which chiefly includes his shaving kit, perfumes, a set of handkerchiefs etc. He is also given a gold ring as a token of the new relationship which he is supposed to get in.
